  • [Take Action] Ensure Michigan Students Learn About Sikhism

April 18, 2019 (Lansing, MI) – The Sikh Coalition has been working behind-the-scenes to ensure that Sikhism is taught in Michigan public schools and that it is taught accurately.

Currently, Michigan’s K-12 social studies standards are under review. In the current draft, one section describes Sikhism incorrectly as a blend of other religions and not as an independent religious tradition. In another section, Sikhism is fully excluded from the list of world religions. We cannot let these standards pass as they currently stand.

The Michigan Board of Education is scheduled to vote on finalizing these standards in June 2019. Already, the Sikh Coalition is hard at work advocating with Michigan community members to correct facts and make sure that Sikhism is included accurately in the state’s social studies standards.

“As an educator, InterFaith Leadership Council President and former school board member, I believe that it is crucial for students in Michigan classrooms to learn about the Sikh community,” said Michigan Sikh community member Raman Kaur. “I urge you to take action and ensure that the new standards include Sikhism accurately.”
At this critical juncture, over one million public school students in Michigan need you to take immediate action to push for standards that include Sikhism accurately.
