April 22, 2019 (New York, NY) – The Sikh Coalition is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2020 Junior Sikh Coalition class.
The Junior Sikh Coalition (JSC) is a student-led initiative designed to inspire Sikh youth, strengthen the communities to which they belong, and help them achieve their leadership potential. JSC engages in leadership trainings, team building workshops, community events and professional conferences, while working to create change in ourselves and our communities.

The deadline to apply is Monday, May 20, 2019. You must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in high school, or a college freshman or sophomore to be eligible to apply.
“The Junior Sikh Coalition has sparked a passion within me to fight for a world where everyone has equal rights, a world where someone is not judged on the way they look, a world where someone is not discriminated against because of what they believe in, and especially a world where people of all cultures and faiths can come together as a community and appreciate all of their differences,” said JSC member Sukhmeet Singh. “JSC has brought together so many of my peers, who have a similar vision for the world into a common space where we are not only able to better ourselves as members of our communities, but also as human beings.”
The Sikh Coalition is seeking applicants for the 2019-2020 year to join a team that is committed to creating real change and has a genuine passion for fighting injustice. We are looking for the next generation of youth leaders who are willing to learn, grow and play a leadership role in building efforts to strengthen Sikh communities.
Since 2012, JSC has trained 77 youth community leaders, who have educated over 1,600 students on bullying prevention and Sikh awareness. The many accomplishments include a partnering with the White House on anti-bullying efforts; presenting anti-bullying workshops to hundreds of other Sikh youth; panel participation regarding the impact that discrimination has on Sikh communities; building alliances with other youth minority organizations like the Native American Shinnecock Youth; publication of a youth-compiled “Nirbhau Nirvair: Poetry and Art Book” (No Fear, No Enemies); serving free meals (langar) to New York City shelters; and organizing open mic nights.
This past year, the Junior Sikh Coalition worked together to create new spaces to talk about mental health, bullying, women’s empowerment, and bias and discrimination.
After the initial applications are screened, qualified applicants will be called for an in-person interview. Applicants accepted into the program must also complete a week-long boot camp, which will be scheduled for the week of July 29, 2019 - August 2, 2019. Applicants must commit to weekly Sunday JSC meetings throughout the school year.
