Dear Supporter Ji,
I’m writing to share that since April 18th, over 400 of Michigan’s Sikh community members have taken direct action asking the Michigan Department of Education (DOE) to make corrections in the draft social studies standards to ensure Sikhism is included accurately. Additionally, 12 Michigan gurdwaras have signed onto a letter requesting changes be made to the proposed social studies standards. The letter was shared with the Michigan DOE and members of the state standards writing committee on May 6th.
We thank you for your overwhelming support and input, which has involved Sikh community members attending Michigan DOE listening sessions across the state – including in Detroit, Oakland, Kalamazoo, Lansing and Grand Rapids – to advocate for Sikh inclusion.
As of today, the public comment period has closed. The Michigan DOE has heard our collective voice and has applauded the community for its organized and respectful approach. Your timely action has helped to ensure the Michigan DOE will take our concerns seriously.
The Sikh Coalition will continue advocating for the requested changes and will notify the community if further action is required to ensure that Sikhism is included accurately, before the Board of Education votes on these standards in June. We want to make sure that Michigan joins the growing list of states in America that include and accurately teach Sikhism in their public schools.
The Sikh Coalition thanks you for your activism and support.
