  • Five days left! 2020 Junior Sikh Coalition Applications

May 15, 2019 (New York, NY) – The Sikh Coalition continues to accept applications for the Junior Sikh Coalition (JSC) class of 2020. JSC is a student-led initiative designed to inspire Sikh youth, strengthen the communities to which they belong, and help them achieve their leadership potential.

Please click here to apply before the May 20th deadline! You must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in high school, or a college freshman or sophomore to be eligible to apply.

During the year, the Junior Sikh Coalition engages in leadership trainings, team building workshops, community events and professional conferences. JSC members also lead out on year-long Jyot projects, which are an opportunity to create and deliver positive community change in an issue area they are passionate about. On May 11th, a few 2019 Junior Sikh Coalition members hosted “Sikh Women’s Appreciation Night” as their Jyot Project. Attended by 50 community members, the event served to empower the community by centering the Kaur narrative and celebrating the accomplishments of Sikh women in their professional fields.

“Through this event, we hoped to show that women can succeed and pursue their passions without sacrificing their faith,” said JSC member Simran Kaur Saberwal. “As a young Sikh woman, I feel that our faith is a force that guides us to creating a more peaceful and equal world.”

Other 2019 Jyot projects include creating a web show that uplifts Sikh voices, hosting a Sikh mentorship event, hosting productive youth discussions on mental health, conducting valuable research in the community and more.

Apply to JSC 2020 and gain the skills to empower your community.

The Junior Sikh Coalition continues to remain a fierce program for youth. Since August 2012, JSC has trained 77 youth community leaders, who have educated over 1,600 students on bullying prevention and Sikh awareness. The many accomplishments include a partnering with the White House on anti-bullying efforts; presenting anti-bullying workshops to hundreds of other Sikh youth; panel participation regarding the impact that discrimination has on Sikh communities; building alliances with other youth minority organizations like the Native American Shinnecock Youth; publication of a youth-compiled “Nirbhau Nirvair: Poetry and Art Book” (No Fear, No Enemies); serving free meals (langar) to New York City shelters; and organizing open mic nights.

After the initial applications are screened, qualified applicants will be called for an in-person interview. Applicants accepted into the program must also complete a week-long boot camp, which will be scheduled for the week of July 29, 2019 - August 2, 2019. Applicants must commit to weekly Sunday JSC meetings throughout the school year.
