June 12, 2019 (New York, NY) – This November, the Sikh community will commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. In addition to the celebrations already taking place across the United States to recognize the anniversary, the Sikh Coalition encourages sangats nationwide to host open houses at their local gurdwara.

“In the United States, gurdwaras often serve as the central place of community for Sikhs,” said Sikh Coalition Community Development Director, Rucha Kaur. “With over 500,000 Sikhs across the country commemorating the 550th anniversary, this is an incredible opportunity to build bridges with our neighbors and introduce them to the beauty and resilience of the Sikh faith.”
The nationwide open houses can take place any weekend from October 11, 2019 to November 15, 2019.
If your gurdwara is interested in hosting an open house, the Sikh Coalition will be able to provide support – including interfaith engagement, elected official engagement, law enforcement engagement, volunteer engagement, media engagement, Sikh awareness resources and seva projects – to ensure your open house is a successful event.
This initiative is part of the Sikh Coalition’s grassroots efforts to empower sangat members nationwide to strengthen relationships with their neighbors and raise awareness of the Sikh faith, community and traditions. In addition to hosting open houses in October and November, the Sikh Coalition can provide direct support to help launch community seva projects during their open houses.

The deadline for committing to work with the Sikh Coalition is September 1, 2019. The sooner you confirm your open house, the sooner we can begin providing you support to make it as successful as possible.
If you have any questions about organizing an open house or hosting a seva project at your gurdwara, please email our team at firstname.lastname@example.org
. We strongly encourage you to organize early so that your event is a success!
Every year, in honor of the chardi kala spirit and resilience of the Sikh community, the Sikh Coalition has organized a National Day of Seva event to commemorate the anniversary of the August 5, 2012 Oak Creek, Wisconsin shooting. This year, the Sikh Coalition has made the decision to dedicate our finite staff capacity and resources to support this initiative, and therefore, we will not be facilitating National Day of Seva projects this year. We encourage Sikhs nationwide to continue their own seva projects to #RememberOakCreek this August.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
