July 11, 2019 (New York, NY) – As the 550th gurpurab of Guru Nanak nears, sangat members across the nation are coming together to host open houses at their local gurdwaras
“Although Sikhs have lived in this area since the 1970s, many of our neighbors still do not know about our faith,” said Kansas community member, Sucha Singh. “Guru Nanak’s gurpurab is already a time of celebration, and we’re excited to have the Sikh Coalition’s support in ensuring that our neighbors can join in the celebration this year – and learn about who Sikhs are.”
The Gurdwara Nanak Darbar Sahib in Olathe, Kansas is the first gurdwara to commit to working with the Sikh Coalition in hosting an open house to commemorate this historic anniversary.
If your gurdwara is interested in hosting an open house, the Sikh Coalition will be able to provide support – including interfaith engagement, elected official engagement, law enforcement engagement, volunteer engagement, media engagement, Sikh awareness resources and seva projects – to ensure your open house is a successful event. Your open house can take place any weekend from October 11, 2019 to November 15, 2019.

This initiative is part of the Sikh Coalition’s grassroots efforts to empower sangat members nationwide to strengthen relationships with their neighbors and raise awareness of the Sikh faith, community and traditions. With over 500,000 Sikhs in the United States celebrating Guru Nanak’s 550th gurpurab this year, this will be an incredible opportunity to build bridges between communities.
The deadline for committing to work with the Sikh Coalition is September 1, 2019. The sooner you confirm your open house, the sooner we can begin providing you support to make it as successful as possible.
