  • [TAKE ACTION] Education Resources for Back to School

August 19, 2019 (New York, NY) -- As students nationwide head back to school, the Sikh Coalition invites you to participate in our Back to School 2.0 campaign aimed at providing Sikh families and all educators with a wide range of key resources to accurately engage in Sikh awareness, school bullying, and religious rights.

Building off of the success of its predecessor, the Sikh Coalition is launching a new and improved version of the Back to School Toolkit. In addition to the Sikh awareness presentations, anti-bullying brochures, Know Your Rights materials, and legal resources that will help protect your children, we have also added new lesson plans, resources, and reading materials for teachers. One major resource includes Sikhism: An Educator’s Guide, a resource explicitly designed to empower teachers with the necessary knowledge about Sikhi and Sikh students.

“This year, we have revamped our Back to School Toolkit to include even more interactive resources for students and educators alike,” said Sikh Coalition Education Director Pritpal Kaur. “With this launch, we hope to empower the community to develop effective and fruitful relationships with their school district officials and area educators, resulting in a higher quality of life for Sikh students across the nation.”

In addition, the Sikh Coalition has spent the past year developing the first-ever C3 resources that educators can easily use to effectively teach students about Sikhism through inquiry. Just launched this month, these materials are now available to more than 9,000 teachers in states that use C3 resources. This collection of resources includes elementary and middle/high school inquiries; a discussion guide for CNN’s United Shades of America episode about the Sikh community; and ancillary background materials about Sikhism and the Sikh community for educators.

    TAKE ACTION:
    1. Share these resources with your friends and family so that they are empowered to engage their classrooms with these free resources this school year! Click here to access the Back to School Toolkit.
    2. Engage your local school district and educators by providing them with the Back to School Toolkit. Click here to view a recent account of how one community member in New York state was able to engage her school district to not only distribute our Toolkit to educators but also increase Sikh awareness overall.
    3. Work with the Sikh Coalition to make a formal announcement about the Back to School Toolkit at your local gurdwara so that more community members get access to these resources. Email education@sikhcoalition.org for more information.

For more information about the Back to School Toolkit, Sikhism: An Educator’s Guide, or to discuss opportunities about how the Sikh Coalition can support you or your local community in outreach efforts to educators, please contact education@sikhcoalition.org.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
