  • Welcome JSC Class of 2020!

August 12, 2019 (New York, NY) – The Sikh Coalition is thrilled to announce the new Junior Sikh Coalition (JSC) Class of 2020! We are proud to welcome the seventh JSC class as we continue our ongoing commitment to building a grassroots network of leaders and supporting our youth sangat members.

The JSC Class of 2020 kicked off the year with a week-long boot camp designed to strengthen leadership skills, introduce Sikh civil rights issues, develop project focus areas, and build a strong community. The team will work during the year toward their own mission statement created during this week: To empower the youth by forging a new generation of leaders who aim to tackle the social injustices that plague our community.

“Like the six classes before them, this new class of youth leaders is passionate, inquisitive, and driven to make a lasting impact in their communities,” said Community Development Manager Harleen Kaur. “We are proud to continue this youth empowerment initiative with so many promising and committed new members, and we look forward to the new class working to fulfill the program’s ongoing legacy.”

The Class of 2020 consists of 24 young leaders, including seven returning second-year members. JSC members hail from all over the Tri-State Area. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences in sangat and Sikhi make for a strong class that will be unafraid to address difficult issues. The group will spend nearly every Sunday afternoon for the next year developing important leadership skills, gaining insight into social justice issues, and learning how to organize their own passion into action.

“This past year, I learned critical skills that are important when hosting events, how to be more confident with my own work, and the skills to become a better public speaker,” said Junior Sikh Coalition member Simran Kaur Saberwal, who has rejoined for the second year. “I’m looking forward to continuing my work with JSC because I see its potential to create a more informed and involved group of youth leaders.”

Since its inception in 2012, the JSC program has trained nearly 80 youth community leaders who have educated over 1,600 students on bullying prevention and Sikh awareness.
