August 28, 2019 (New York, NY) – As Sikhs worldwide commemorate Guru Nanak’s 550th gurpurab this year, the Sikh Coalition is working with sangats across the United States to celebrate this historic anniversary. This effort includes hosting gurdwara open houses
to welcome elected officials, law enforcement, and members of the community, as well as facilitating service projects
with national partners.
It is not too late to request the Sikh Coalition’s resources in hosting an open house at your gurdwara. The deadline to request resources is September 1, 2019, so email firstname.lastname@example.org to get started today!
“Every human being is equal–a tenet that Guru Nanak instilled in Sikhi through his teachings,” said Surendrapal Singh, who is leading an open house at the Gurdwara Sahib Charlotte in North Carolina. “Our sangat hopes that through this initiative, we’ll be able to share this message, and more about the beauty and resilience of the Sikh faith with our neighbors.”
Nearly a dozen gurdwaras have already signed on to these efforts, which will help people across the United States to learn more about the Sikh community, faith and traditions. They include gurdwaras in Olathe, KS; Shawnee, KS; Charlotte, NC; Oakland, NJ; Los Angeles, CA; Riverside, CA; Santa Ana, CA; St, Louis, MO; Albuquerque, NM; San Antonio, TX, and Grand Rapids, MI.
If your gurdwara is interested in hosting an open house, the Sikh Coalition will be able to provide support – including interfaith engagement, elected official engagement, law enforcement engagement, volunteer engagement, media engagement, Sikh awareness resources and seva projects – to ensure your open house is a successful event. Your open house can take place any weekend from October 11, 2019, to November 15, 2019.
