  • MI Sangat Builds Capacity to Engage Educators and More!

October 8, 2019 (Detroit, MI) -- As part of our ongoing commitment to build a grassroots network of leaders and increase meaningful engagement in local sangats, the Sikh Coalition hosted a Sikh Presenters Course at Mata Tripta Ji Gurdwara Sahib in Plymouth, MI. The training was organized in partnership with local sangat members and attended by 34 community members from the Greater Detroit Area.

“Our goal with these trainings is to build capacity in local sangats so participants can effectively discuss Sikhi, including our culture, faith and beliefs, and history,” said Community Development Director Rucha Kaur. “We are proud of the talent and results from this day-long training. We are excited to have these participants engage others and increase awareness in their environments.”

Detroit-area sangat members now join sangats from all over the country that have been recently trained in delivering engaging and knowledgeable Sikh Awareness Presentations, including in Piscataway, NJ; St. Louis, MO; and, most recently, San Jose, CA.

“We were excited to have the Sikh Coalition team train our sangat,” said Harminder Pal Singh, a Michigan community member who attended the training. “As the Michigan sangat continues to grow and flourish, we are looking for more opportunities to raise the Sikh community’s profile, and, with this training, we are confident that we can increase our impact and visibility here.”

We also took this opportunity to reach out to other Detroit area sangats to talk about ways to engage local educators and make classrooms safer for our children. Approximately 100 sangat members at Guru Nanak Sikh Center in Lansing, MI learned about the new and improved Back to School Toolkit, which features even more lesson plans, teaching tools, and our first-ever C3 Resources for educators to effectively teach students about Sikhism through inquiry. To bring these trainings and other resources to your sangat, email us at community@sikhcoalition.org.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
