Dear Supporter Ji,

This Thanksgiving, as I sit with my family and reflect on the year, I am thankful for the help of the Sikh Coalition. Because of their unwavering commitment, I was able to get justice after enduring years of racial and religious harassment at my workplace. The Sikh Coalition and Public Justice worked with me to resolve a multi-year dispute against my employer Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in a way that exemplifies the Sikhi understanding of forgiveness and restorative justice.

One of the main goals of the Sikh Coalition’s legal team is to provide free legal assistance to Sikhs who have been discriminated against based on their religious beliefs. They can only do that with the investment of supporters like you. I am grateful that I spoke up and reached out, because the Sikh Coalition helped me navigate a successful resolution that ensured I don’t have to endure a toxic work environment, and puts a plan in place if that ever happens again.

All in all, I credit the resolution in my case–namely the mandatory cultural competency trainings and my new position within the company–to the Sikh Coalition’s hard work. I am now thriving in my new department, and I know that I, along with my 20,000 colleagues, will be better protected and respected by one another through the agreement in my case and the Sikh awareness trainings that my company will implement.

I was able to pursue legal recourse because the Sikh Coalition’s services were free-of-cost to me; these services are available to the sangat because of the investment by community members like yourself.

Through their focus on restorative justice, the Sikh Coalition has pursued this type of work, helping people like me all across the country, for free. This is not the only instance of the Sikh Coalition defending the rights of others and working to end workplace discrimination for Sikh Americans. Over the past 18 years, they have been instrumental in protecting Sikh Americans and other minorities from workplace discrimination within government agencies and at major companies in the private sector, including J.B. Hunt and Disney.

I am truly grateful for the Sikh Coalition’s dedication to eradicating workplace discrimination in America for Sikhs. Your support will ensure this must-needed work continues. As we give thanks for the things we are grateful for, I hope you will join me in supporting the Sikh Coalition this Thanksgiving. With their expertise as a resource to our community, I feel confident that we all are in good hands.

Chardi Kala,

Sawinder Singh
Maryland sangat member and former Sikh Coalition legal client
