includes best practices for drivers to stay safe, as well as a list of things to do during and immediately after any bias-related incident. These tips are available in English and Punjabi, and we encourage you to share them with any friends or family you have who drive a taxi or rideshare full- or part-time.
Last month, the Sikh Coalition took the case of
a Sikh American Uber driver who was berated and attacked by a customer in Bellingham, Washington. Within hours of learning of the incident, our legal team began advising the driver and engaged the prosecutor’s office; we also worked with local media to call attention to the case while protecting the privacy of the individual. Ultimately, the attacker was charged with a hate crime under Washington state law, and members of the sangat, along with interfaith allies, attended his arraignment.
The Sikh Coalition remains engaged in the Bellingham case, and we will share more details as they become available. In the meantime, we remain committed to helping Sikh Americans who experience bias, bigotry, and backlash. If you or someone you know has been discriminated against or subjected to bias based upon religious beliefs or Sikh identity, please
contact our legal team.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
