February 4, 2020 (Stockton and San Jose, CA) -- In an ongoing effort to prevent and combat bias-based bullying and to empower parents to further engage with their children’s educators, the Sikh Coalition is excited to share that in the past month, we have led two back-to-school forums in Stockton and San Jose, California.
At both Stockton Gurdwara Sahib Khalsa School and San Jose Gurdwara Sahib Khalsa School, more than 650 Sikh children and their parents joined us for a 90 minute session on the effects of bullying and how they can bring their situation to light with educators and school administrators. Students and parents learned to recognize bullying in its different forms and what they can do if they themselves are being targeted.
In addition to the presentation, the children were able to share their stories of bullying, giving their classmates motivation to share their own experiences. Attendees also took part in the ‘Sikhi Elevator Pitch’ workshop, an activity designed to help children craft answers to questions about their identity and inspire strength and confidence in their response.
"Bullying is a huge issue in schools. It is important for both children and parents to know how to deal with bullying situations,” said Pushpinder Kaur, the Principal of the San Jose Khalsa School and the author of The Boy with Long Hair. “The back-to-school forum is helpful to learn how to effectively communicate with the teachers and other school officials about the needs and challenges our children face in schools. We need to ensure our children feel safe in their classrooms so that they can do well in their education."
Each child and parent was able to take home some bullying prevention resources, including our kid-friendly bullying pamphlet
, a parent’s guide to bullying postcard
, and a bullying fact sheet
. For those who could not attend, know that the Back-to-School Toolkit
has a wide array of resources that can be used by both parents and educators to make classrooms a safer and more inclusive space for Sikhs.
The Sikh Coalition would like to thank our volunteers and sevadaars for making these events possible through their unwavering support and dedication to the Sikh youth. If you would like to host a back-to-school forum at your local Khalsa School, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
