March 9, 2020 (New York, NY) – In just weeks, the U.S. Census Bureau will begin mailing out invitations to complete the 2020 census to every household in the nation. To make sure sangats nationwide are ready to participate, the Sikh Coalition is equipping our volunteers with a new Census Sevadaar Toolkit.
As a reminder, the census is a national headcount that happens every ten years, and every household in the country is required by law to thoroughly and accurately fill out the census. It is very important for Sikh Americans to participate, because the data that comes from this count is used to allocate money for resources (including schools, roads, and hospitals), help businesses make decisions about where to invest and create jobs, and determine political representation like electoral college votes.
“The Census Sevadaar Toolkit includes language and media for spreading awareness about the 2020 census in person, on WhatsApp, and via Facebook, as well as a clear and simple guide to gurdwara tabling,” said Community Development Director Rucha Kaur. “Our goal is to share as much information as possible while still making it easy for Sikhs across the country to help one another respond to the census.”
In the coming weeks, sevadaars equipped with this toolkit will be tabling at gurdwaras to help families submit their responses to the census quickly and easily online. They will also be equipped to answer questions about the census, including how Sikh Americans can identify themselves as Sikh if they choose to do so. If you are interested in serving as one of these sevadaars, please reach out to email@example.com today!
As a reminder, everyone can and should fill out the census--including citizens, permanent residents, and undocumented persons. The Census Bureau will never ask about your social security number, citizenship status, or political views, nor will they ask for money. If someone claiming to be a Census Bureau employee approaches you with these or other suspicious questions, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
