  • [INVITE] Join Medical Experts for COVID-19 Gurdwara Safety Panel

May 27, 2020 (New York, NY) -- As states continue to evaluate different stages of gradually reopening public life, the Sikh Coalition invites you to join us for a critical online conversation regarding gurdwara public health and safety in the new COVID-19 world. The focus of this webinar will be on public health recommendations and guidelines for gurdwaras as we work to meet the needs of our sangat during a time of unprecedented challenges.

Please join us Saturday, May 30 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM EDT (1:00 to 2:30 PM PDT). RSVP is mandatory, and seats are filling up fast. If you want to join, please fill out the RSVP form to receive an email linking you to the webinar.

The webinar will be moderated by Sikh Coalition board member Dr. Suneet Kaur. Dr. Kaur is a primary care physician and an assistant professor of medicine through the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She also serves as the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Kaur is also a North American Sikh Medical and Dental (NASMDA) Executive Committee Member.

    The panelists include:

    • Dr. Jasjit Singh: Pediatric infectious diseases subspecialist who currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Univerity of California, Irvine and the Medical Epidemiologist for CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange, CA. She also serves on the boards of Orange County Interfaith Network and Interfaith Youth Council of Orange County.
    • Dr. Amit Tibb: Director of Interventional Pulmonology and Critical Care Ultrasonography at Valley Medical Group in Ridgewood, NJ, who has been working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 medical response in one of the hardest-hit parts of the nation.
    • Dr. Sangeeta Kaur: Board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) who practices at Beaumont Health in Royal Oak, MI, where she is the section chief for the generalist OB/GYN division and the Associate Program Director for the OB/GYN residency. She also serves on the conflict resolution committee of the Rochester Hills Sikh Gurdwara and is a core volunteer for the Sikh Youth Alliance of North America.
    • Pritpal Singh: A Trustee at Sant Sagar Gurdwara in Queens, NY, which is another one of the hardest hit areas in the country. He has also been a member of Queens Community Board 13 since 2011. He runs a senior social daycare, and his company also provides long-term care for the elderly and other people in need.
    • Dr. Gurvinder Singh Rekhi: Director of the BS Pharmaceutical Sciences Program at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. Prior to academia, he worked as a pharmacist and pharmaceutical scientist. He also serves as the religious coordinator and sewadaar of the Sikh Educational Welfare Association Inc (SEWA), in Roswell, GA.

RSVP is mandatory, with almost 100 seats already filled. If you want to join, please fill out the RSVP form to receive an email linking you to the webinar.

In the interim, if you are responsible for gurdwara programming, please continue to take every measure to reduce sangat size at any given time at gurdwara, including by suspending divaans and postponing all large events (celebrations and nagar keertans) where crowds may gather. Consider online programming so local sangats can continue to engage. For more specific details on CDC guidelines, click here.

For additional resources and tips related to keeping sangats safe and gurdwaras clean, please see resources from the North American Sikh Medical and Dental Association and others in English and Punjabi. This time of ongoing upheaval and crisis is difficult, but it requires us to make the best choices for the health and safety of all. Together, we will continue to adapt as we look forward to a time when things will once again feel more normal. As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
