  • Remembering June of 1984

June 1, 2020 (New York, NY) -- Thirty-six years ago, the Indian Army launched its assault on Darbar Sahib (popularly known as the Golden Temple) and dozens of other gurdwaras throughout Punjab. We join Sikhs around the world in solemnly remembering this tragedy.

Per eyewitness accounts, Operation Blue Star ultimately claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Sikhs. Throughout the rest of 1984 and the decade that followed, Sikhs in India continued to be subjected to targeted killings, mass mob violence, and broader repression by the state. The Sikh Coalition recognizes the events of 1984 as a turning point in modern Sikh history. Moreover, given the persistence of anti-Sikh discrimination and the continued impunity of those who perpetrated and oversaw this tragedy, we firmly believe in preserving and elevating the stories of those who experienced profound trauma.

In order to keep the historical memory of 1984 and the subsequent years alive, we are sharing a series of resources. Foremost among these is the 1984 Living History Project, which has countless interviews of eyewitnesses and family members. We encourage you to document our collective history. Additional content of note includes:

    Reports

Today, the rising tides of bigotry and nationalism across our country and the world, and the persistent threat of extremism and hate, endanger minorities and underrepresented groups. We must continue to support efforts to ensure accountability and justice, including ongoing demands for complete transparency and accountability in the murder of George Floyd. We must stand and act in solidarity.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly, and to remember and honor those who died doing so.
