  • [GOTV] Voting to Fight for Your Civil Rights

August 31, 2020 (Bellingham, WA) -- More than a century ago this week, on September 4, 1907, Sikh and other South Asian immigrants in Bellingham, Washington were attacked, robbed, and run out of their homes by angry mobs. This organized assault marked what was possibly the first burst of targeted violence aimed at our community in the United States.

This week, we are pausing to remember these Bellingham riots as yet another instance of the Sikh American community persevering through bigotry and backlash. We also recognize, however, that the ongoing struggle for civil rights that we share with so many other Americans is all the more reason to make sure that you are prepared to vote this November.

Watch this short video by award-winning filmmaker Sati Kaur featuring Bellingham sangat member Balwinder Kaur reflecting on the riots and explaining why she will vote in 2020.

The link between voting and protecting the hard-earned wins of the civil rights fights we have shared with so many of our fellow Americans has never been clearer than it is in 2020.

National Sikh Voter Registration Day is September 20--just a few short weeks away. Our team of more than 60 sevadaars in 40 different cities is working around the clock to help their sangats register to vote, and you can check your voter registration for free online. In the meantime, we are working to share information about how to vote by mail in your state and elevate Sikh American policy priorities in the national political conversation.

Through November 3, the Sikh Coalition will continue working to provide information pertaining to voting and civic engagement. Please keep checking our website for new information, and reach out to gotv@sikhcoalition.org with any questions. We will continue adjusting our organizing plans and guidelines around the COVID-19 pandemic in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other public health officials.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.

Note: The Sikh Coalition is a non-partisan, non-profit organization. All Get Out The Vote (GOTV) work is being done in support of broader Sikh American civic engagement, and not for the benefit of any candidate, elected official, or political party.
