As a reminder, Mr. Blake--a Black man--was shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, WI on Sunday, August 23. He remains hospitalized.
Last week, the Sikh Coalition also posted
three ways that you can take action to demand justice for Mr. Blake and be an ally to the Black community. Those actions include calling or emailing the Kenosha District Attorney and Wisconsin Department of Justice
with this script to demand a full investigation,
contacting your senators about the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020, and
making sure that you are registered to vote in the upcoming U.S. elections.
Systemic anti-Black racism within law enforcement and throughout the United States contributes directly to the deaths of unarmed Black people. This deadly problem has to change, and the Sikh community must stand in unequivocal solidarity with Black Americans in our shared struggle to combat bigotry, racism, and hate. The Sikh Coalition believes that we must continue to support efforts to ensure justice, including ongoing demands for complete transparency and accountability in the cases of those who have been killed as a result of police brutality. We must also address the anti-Black sentiments within our own community by vocalizing that Black Lives Matter. policy principles document.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
