The Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement recognize the field of Ethnic Studies as an important opportunity for students from many minority communities to see themselves and their histories reflected in the classroom. While fighting for positive Sikh representation, we also support the efforts by other communities to be specifically represented in the ESMC in order to advance anti-racist education. This includes reconvening a representative ESMC committee and promoting specific lesson plans from a range of other underrepresented California communities, in keeping with the recommendations of leading scholars in the Ethnic Studies field. We will continue to fight for this holistic approach alongside other groups working on this issue.
In addition to rallying Sikhs from across the state to submit public comments before the end of the month, the Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement are working to influence the Ethnic Studies conversation and ensure that our
recommendations and draft lesson plan are considered. Advocating alongside the California sangat and other minority groups in the fight for Ethnic Studies, we will make it clear that those who are shaping the ESMC must
#StopIgnoringSikhs.
