  • [INVITE] Why Sikh Americans Must Vote

September 9, 2020 (New York, NY) -- In advance of the U.S. elections on November 3, the Sikh Coalition is organizing a virtual panel to hear from leading Sikh voices in public service about the importance of voting this fall and how to build community power through civic engagement.

“ਸਾਡੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣੋ: Your Vote is Your Voice” will feature a discussion with Hoboken, NJ Mayor Ravi Bhalla; Associate Counsel for U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin (D-IL) Manpreet Kaur Teji; and New Haven Unified School District Elected Trustee Sarabjit Kaur Cheema. This exciting discussion will be held virtually next Wednesday, September 16 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM EDT (3:00 to 4:00 PM PDT). RSVP is mandatory; click here to reserve your spot now.

The focus of the panel will be to understand the role voting plays at the local, state, and federal levels, and why it is more important than ever before that Sikh Americans exercise their right to vote this fall. Following this discussion, National Sikh Voter Registration Day will take place on Sunday, September 20, when sevadaars across the country will be working to check voter registrations in their sangat online for free.

“Regardless of your political views, we can all agree that it is extremely important to ensure that every community member understands the importance of voting, and the impact it can have on them and the community in which they live,” said Satjeet Kaur, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “We are so excited to have three accomplished Sikh civil servants join us to discuss how we can make our voices heard in the lead-up to this critical election.”

RSVP now for “ਸਾਡੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣੋ: Your Vote is Your Voice” on September 16. Also, make sure to check your voter registration using our free tool, learn how to vote by mail in your state if you choose to do so, and join our team of sevadaars committed to getting out the Sikh vote!

Through November 3, the Sikh Coalition will continue working to provide information pertaining to voting and civic engagement. We are at a critical moment when we must collectively increase voter turnout to shape a future that elevates Sikh Americans and other minority communities. Voting in the upcoming election and beyond can help create a better tomorrow for all.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.

Note: The Sikh Coalition is a non-partisan, non-profit organization. All Get Out The Vote (GOTV) work is being done in support of broader Sikh American civic engagement, and not for the benefit of any candidate, elected official, or political party.
