  • LAST CALL: Act on California Ethnic Studies

September 29, 2020 (Sacramento, CA) -- Tomorrow is the final day of the latest public comment round to contact the California Department of Education and tell them to #StopIgnoringSikhs.

If you haven’t already take a couple of moments to use our free tool to make your voice heard about the latest draft of the California Ethinc Studies Model Curriculum (ESMC), public comment closes at 12 PM PDT on Wednesday, September 30--please send your pre-written email and use the calling feature to leave a short voicemail with our script today.

If you have already taken these actions, thank you for fighting for our children’s chance to see themselves--and so many other communities that make our state strong--in the classroom! Can you forward the following message to your family and friends in California, whether via text, WhatsApp, or social media, and encourage them to join our effort?

The California Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum is a chance for the children of diverse communities to see themselves reflected in the classroom. Unfortunately, despite petitions, testimonies, and a formal letter from 52 gurdwaras, the Sikh community’s stories aren’t being told as of the most recent draft. Can you visit bit.ly/stop-ignoring-sikhs and enter your name, address, and email to quickly and easily contact the California Department of Education about this issue?

Additionally, if you have family or friends who are primarily Punjabi speakers, feel free to share with them Sikh Coalition Community Development Director Rucha Kaur’s recent appearance on Punjabi Radio USA discussing the importance of the ESMC.

While you are sending emails and making calls to the California Department of Education, the Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement are working to rally elected officials to our cause. Over the course of this month, we have been working to secure a letter signed by California assembly members and state senators who are speaking out about the lack of meaningful representation for our community in the ESMC. The letter argues that these legislators “deem it critically important to add a lesson plan about Sikhism in order to combat bullying, discrimination, hate crimes, and profiling against the community--but also to celebrate the community’s positive contributions to the history of California.”

Even after the close of this most recent public comment period, the Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement--who have been our partners in this effort since it began in March--will continue to provide updates on the path forward, including regarding the next hearing scheduled in November. While fighting for positive Sikh representation, we also continue to support efforts by other communities to be specifically represented in the Model Curriculum.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
