The Sikh Coalition News
October 28, 2020
  • Dear Supporter Ji,

    As the Sikh Coalition heads into our 20th year, we continue to empower sangats and stand against hate crimes, employment discrimination, racial profiling, and school bullying. Today we are launching our year-end fundraising drive. We ask that you consider supporting earlier so that we can remain hyper-focused on our programmatic work in this time of uncertainty and prepare for 2021.

    2020 has been a challenging year for us all. However, thanks to the support of the sangat, the Sikh Coalition has pivoted to help communities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic while also pushing our core programmatic work. These efforts have included:
    • Providing guidelines and legal representation to obtain PPE accommodations for Sikh healthcare professionals;
    • Creating and disseminating more than 25 resources in both English and Punjabi on topics like federal benefits and relief, immigration and citizenship, travel restrictions, and employee rights, which have collectively received 42,000+ views;
    • Creating more than 50 sessions of virtual content like Kid's Corner and Summer Series to bring communities together with 500,000+ views across all sessions; and
    • Placed 67 COVID-related media stories, including features on 20 different local seva projects and multiple national-level pieces.

    We accomplished all this while fulfilling our normal mission of protecting Sikh civil rights, including by:
    • Responding to 200+ requests for free legal aid, including providing free legal representation on hate crime and school bullying cases;
    • Continuing to advocate for the inclusion of Sikh community in the California Ethnic Model Studies Curriculum, by way of a bipartisan letter signed by 25 assembly members and state senators, a letter signed by 52 gurdwaras, and more than 1,200 community member petition signatures; and
    • Doubling down on our civic engagement work with volunteer mobilization and a collection of resources designed to help Sikh Americans across the country register, plan, and pledge to vote.

    It is vital that the Sikh Coalition is able to weather this storm and continue protecting and advocating for all of us in a time of great uncertainty.

    Now more than ever, nonprofits like ours need your support. If you are in the position to give, we humbly ask that you stand with us again by making a donation today. We must raise $1.2 million before the end of 2020 to sustain our work in 2021 and beyond.

    Chardi Kala,

    The Sikh Coalition Team
