December 13, 2020 (Minneapolis, MN) -- You may have gotten this information already from the Sikh Society of Minnesota, but we wanted to make sure that you saw this call to action, so we decided to reach out as well!
As you may recall, the sangat of the Sikh Society of Minnesota mobilized and sent public comment to the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) in February of 2020 to provide feedback on the existing social studies state standards that did not include Sikhism. These standards provide guidance to educators on what topics they should teach in their classrooms. Moreover, the Sikh Society of Minnesota
has been partnering with the Sikh Coalition
, who has been monitoring the Minnesota social studies state standards since 2016, as we work together to request the inclusion of Sikhism, which was excluded from previous standards.
Earlier this month, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) released their draft academic standards for social studies. Unfortunately, this first draft still neglects to include Sikhism in the discussion of belief systems around the world. Our voice was not heard the first time around, but we have another opportunity to advocate for Sikhi to be included appropriately: Join us to ensure that Sikhi is added in the next draft of social studies standards for public schools in Minnesota.
The MDE has opened another round of ‘public comment’ where you can fill out a brief survey to call for the inclusion of Sikhism in these standards. Take quick, simple action today to make your voice heard
- Follow this link and put in your basic information to receive instructions on how to complete the MDE survey.
- Complete the MDE survey.
- Forward this email or post the simple link, www.sikhcoalition.org/minnesota-sikhs, on social media so that your family and friends in Minnesota can do the same! Consider also reaching out to your child’s teachers.
This round of public comment closes on January 4, 2021, so it is important that you fill out the MDE’s survey as soon as possible!
Please email email@example.com
with any questions. You can expect to hear reminders about this action a couple of times before this upcoming deadline so that we can ensure we get as many people to take action as possible.
The Sikh Coalition has been working with sevadaars at the Sikh Society of Minnesota on these social studies standards since 2019. Together, we submitted two letters (one from the Sikh Coalition
and one from the gurdwara
) to state education officials in February, along with more than 200 messages from sangat members requesting Sikh inclusion during the initial round of public comment last year.
As we again work with the sangat on this second round of public comment, we are also pursuing meetings with state education officials and reaching out to elected officials to enlist their aid in ensuring a second draft of the standards that includes our community’s history. Together, we can ensure that Minnesota becomes the fifteenth state to include Sikhism in its social studies standards!
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
