This open letter is the latest show of ever-growing solidarity and support for the farmers’ movement and condemnation of the Indian government’s anti-democratic response, following a flurry of international activist and celebrity messages in the last two weeks. The increasing number of non-Sikh organizations speaking out and broader public awareness of this issue underscores the importance of protecting the human rights of Indian farmers--and the need to hold U.S. officials, including congressional offices and the White House, accountable for taking greater action.
The Sikh Coalition continues to drive, lead, and support other efforts around the farmers’ protest. In the past two weeks, we have
denounced the State Department’s weak statement on the situation, called on
press freedom organizations to raise the alarm about the treatment of Indian reporters, worked with
media outlets the Sikh diaspora’s reaction to the protest, and supported individuals publishing relevant
opinion pieces; this work comes on the heels of
our two letters to the Biden Administration, as well as our
congressional lobbying and
draft resolution language, which have been used by thousands of community members to take action. We also continue to consult with sangats who are reaching out to their elected officials and work with journalists to frame the farmers’ struggle respectfully and accurately.
We look forward to providing new actions you can take, as well as additional updates, soon; for now, we ask that you join us in thanking these allies for lending their voices in a critical moment.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
