“Diversity is an undeniable part of what makes New York City a great place to live,” said Nikki Singh, Sikh Coalition Policy and Advocacy Manager. “We are excited to join this effort at the intersection of our advocacy and education work, because it will ensure that young Sikhs and other students in New York City learn about multiple faith traditions as a result of more inclusive educational materials and better-equipped teachers.”
Since last year, the Sikh Coalition has been working with partner organizations--including the Interfaith Center of New York, Muslim Community Network New York, and the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding--to rally support for this effort. Late last week, we held a joint digital press event with these partners and Council Member Dromm’s office to unveil a letter
, signed by more than 70 individuals and groups--including area gurdwaras and other Sikh organizations like Kaurageous Love--in support of this effort.
For now, the most important thing you can do to support this resolution is fill out the form and send a clear message to your city council member
, and then ask your family and friends in NYC to do the same. We look forward to providing further updates on this resolution in the days and months ahead.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
