Dear Supporter Ji,

Earlier this year, the California Board of Education released a final draft of the state’s Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum. After an 18-month campaign led by the Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement--and supported by thousands of Sikh community members across the state of California--we were pleased that the lesson plans and other material about the California Sikh community that we fought for was included in the curriculum.

Punjabi Radio USA: Sikh stories now included in California ethnic studies curriculum

As a result of this update, Sikh stories can now be taught at the high school-level in ethnic studies courses at California public schools. But there is more work to be done, and we need your help.

Students and parents will play an important role in ensuring that Sikh stories are included in classrooms in the upcoming school year. We hope that you will join us tomorrow for our “Ethnic Studies and the California Sikh Community” virtual Zoom webinar. The webinar will take place in English and Punjabi and begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.; there will be an opportunity for students and parents to ask questions to the panelists. Please see our email below for more information, and register here to reserve your spot for the webinar.

We hope you join us tomorrow!

Chardi Kala,

Pritpal Kaur

Recognizing these contributions through ethnic studies and teaching about them accurately in California’s public schools is critical for creating safer and inclusive classrooms for all children. We hope that you will join us on June 30 to learn more about the importance of including Sikh stories in ethnic studies and how you can #TakeAction to bring them to your classroom in the upcoming school year.

For questions about the June 30 webinar or the ESMC, please email our education team at education@sikhcoalition.org.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
