  • Update and Webinar on Sikhi and North Carolina's State Social Studies Standards

July 19, 2021 (Raleigh, NC) -- On July 8, the North Carolina State Board of Education voted in favor of adopting new content and examples that include Sikhism, which will accompany the K-12 State Social Studies Standards for the 2021-22 school year. Join the Sikh Coalition's webinar on August 5 to help ensure that this content makes it into North Carolina classrooms!

As a reminder, the standards in North Carolina are structured differently than in the other 14 states in which the Sikh Coalition has successfully secured the accurate inclusion of Sikhism. Sikhism is now included in the accompanying documents--rather than the actual standards or objectives--from which teachers can draw classroom materials. This still represents a significant step forward, however: Though it was once entirely omitted in the standards, Sikhism can now be taught in Grades 5 and 7, as well as in World History.

Now, with help from the North Carolina sangat, important work must proceed to ensure that the Sikh-specific material in the content and examples reaches teachers and students across the state in the upcoming school year. It is imperative that we harness this opportunity now, because the new superintendent may make changes that could affect the standards in years to come.

To learn more about how you can use these new content and examples to get Sikhism taught in your local school, the Sikh Coalition is hosting a webinar for the community on Thursday, August 5, at 6:30 PM EST. Please click here to register, and share the link with your friends and family in North Carolina!

This development provides the opportunity for North Carolina’s 1.4 million public schoolchildren to learn about Sikhism alongside other world religions; now, it’s up to you to make it happen. Thanks to more than 10 years of advocacy work, the Sikh Coalition has ensured that more than 48 percent of public school students in states across the nation have access to accurate and appropriate information about Sikhism.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
