Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,
As you are a key sevadaar in the campaign for Sikh inclusion in the Minnesota Social Studies State Standards, we are reaching out to let you know that the second draft of the Minnesota Academic Standards for Social Studies has now been released for public review and we have 12 days to share our feedback.
As you may remember, we mobilized as a sangat in December 2020 to share our disappointment in not being included as a world religion in the first draft of the proposed Social Studies Standards. We were successful in getting noticed by the writing committee--we were mentioned by name in a number of meetings, and were given verbal confirmation that we would be included in the next draft.
Unfortunately, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has now completely removed the entire standard and benchmark that specifically mentioned world religions. This eliminates the possibility of the Sikh community being included, and students may now not even learn about world religions meaningfully at all.
We are collaborating with people of all faiths in Minnesota to present a unified ask to the MDE: to make edits to the standards and include more robust benchmarks to teach about world religions in a meaningful way, which will specifically include Sikhi.
We need you to raise your voice again; this is the last chance to make an impact and get the Sikh community included. Fill out this form by 4 PM on Monday, August 16, which will send an email making these asks on your behalf to the MDE and writing committee chairs. This will be saved on the MDE record as your public comment. Because the MDE is not organizing town halls, public comment is the only way to make our voice heard, so we need as many people to submit as possible. Please share this request with your friends and family as well!
If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this email or reach out to email@example.com.
