“The Sikh Coalition considers education work a driving part of our long-term mission to raise Sikh awareness,” said Satjeet Kaur, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “We engage all parties--lawmakers, administrators, teachers, parents, and students--to ensure that accurate, appropriate information about Sikhi actually makes it into classroom instruction, which in turn helps our students feel both safe and seen.”
To date, the Sikh Coalition’s education team has ensured that Sikhi appears in
state standards in 14 different states, benefitting more than 45 percent of our nation’s public schoolchildren; produced and shared a robust collection of the leading
free educational resources for Sikh students, Sikh parents, educators, and administrators, including the first-ever C3 hub about the Sikh community; conducted professional development trainings for thousands of educators across the nation; ensured, in collaboration with our legal and advocacy teams, that Sikh students have
resources and recourse in the face of bullying; consulted on children’s books, lesson plans, educational videos, curricula, and more; and mobilized community advocates from coast to coast in pursuit of safer, more inclusive classrooms.
“It has been my genuine privilege to serve as the Sikh Coalition’s Education Director for nearly four years,” said Pritpal Kaur, the outgoing Sikh Coalition Education Director. “This position allowed me to work with incredible colleagues who centered education at the core of our civil rights work, but also with so many parents, students, and educators who we directly impact.”
The Sikh Coalition is deeply thankful to Pritpal for her leadership and numerous contributions to our education work, and we are grateful to have her continuing on a part-time basis until the end of October 2021 before she departs from the organization. We look forward to welcoming a new member to our team in the months ahead!
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
