  • Welcoming New Board Members, Legal Advisory Committee

    November 16, 2021 (New York, NY) -- Today, the Sikh Coalition is proud to welcome two new members, Nitasha Kaur Sawhney and Gurpreet Singh Ahuja, to our Board of Trustees, as well as to share more information about our new Legal Advisory Committee.

    Nitasha Kaur Sawhney is an Equity Partner in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area offices of Garcia Hernández Sawhney LLP. She specializes in labor and employment and education law, serving as outside general counsel to educational institutions where she advises on matters concerning governance and policy, labor management relations and negotiations, employment, educational foundations, public meeting laws, ethics and strategic planning, and problem solving. She has been active with numerous local and national racial and social justice organizations, including by being appointed as a Commissioner on the California Commission on Asian Pacific Islander Affairs twice.

    Gurpreet Singh Ahuja is the Division Chief of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery with CHOC Children’s Specialists as well as a Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of California, Irvine. He has been recognized as an expert in the field of pediatric otolaryngology-head and neck surgery for over 25 years with a special interest in pediatric airway reconstruction, congenital head and neck disorders, and in the EXIT procedure for the management of the compromised fetal/neonatal airway. Along with his wife, he is an active community leader and volunteer serving the Orange County community with a commitment to promoting community relations, social justice, and interfaith understanding.

    “We are excited to welcome Nitasha and Gurpreet to our board,” said Satjeet Kaur, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “Our organization benefits from an already active and invested board, and we look forward to the guidance and vision that our two newest members will bring as our staff, board, and sevadaars all look toward next year’s transition and the next 20 years of our work.”

    The Sikh Coalition has also recently welcomed our Legal Advisory Committee (LAC), a dedicated group of attorneys who provide guidance and assistance to our legal team in the course of their pro bono work. The LAC includes:

    “Our Legal Advisory Committee has already been instrumental in helping us orchestrate our first-ever CLE conference, Realizing Justice for All, this fall,” said Amrith Kaur Aakre, Sikh Coalition Legal Director. “We look forward to their continued involvement with the organization, providing expertise and resources on various legal fronts to enable us to better serve the nationwide sangat.”
