March 3, 2022 (Whiteland, IN) -- Last Wednesday, a Sikh high school senior at Whiteland Community High School faced severe bias-motivated harassment and physical assault from a group of students who said “Why do you wear these turbans” and “Why are you here?” The student, who currently requests to remain anonymous in an effort to protect his privacy, retained the Sikh Coalition to provide free legal support and advocate on his behalf to school administration. On Sunday, March 6 at 3 PM EST, the Sikh Coalition will partner with local youth empowerment organization LOK-E to host a virtual community town hall. The specific purpose for this townhall is to facilitate a conversation with the Indianapolis Sikh community about all of the related issues taking place within Indiana’s public school system.
If you are an Indianapolis-area Sikh student, parent, or concerned community member, we encourage you to attend this community town hall and share your experiences and perspective. This meeting will take place in English and Punjabi and provide an opportunity for the sangat to learn from each other and help develop solutions that uplift and protect all students

“No one deserves to be targeted because of who they are,” said Inderpreet Kaur, Sikh Coalition Community Development Manager. “We know that when issues arise at school, they can impact a student’s ability to feel safe in the classroom. We hope that every sangat member in the Indianapolis area will join us on Sunday to share what their experience is like in Indiana’s public school system.”
Join us on Sunday for this important conversation. Click here to register now and receive the Zoom log-in information for the meeting.
The Sikh Coalition provides free legal aid to Sikhs targeted by bias, bigotry, and backlash, including at school. As our client’s legal case moves forward, we will continue to provide updates. Since 2016, the Sikh Coalition has also been providing resources about Sikhism to Indiana organizations and officials. Through the support of the sangat, Indiana became the 13th state
to include Sikhi in its social studies standards in 2020. We look forward to sharing how the sangat can take action to bring Sikhi to their classroom at Sunday’s community town hall.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
