Dear Supporter Ji,
The Sikh Coalition, in collaboration with Indianapolis-based community organization LOK-E, would like to invite you to join us for a free virtual workshop, Bring Sikhi to Indy Classrooms, on Sunday, April 3 at 4:00 PM EST.
Since 2016, the Sikh Coalition has been providing resources about Sikhi to Indiana organizations and school officials. Through the support of the sangat, Indiana became the 13th state to include Sikhi in its social studies standards in 2020. Still, there exists an important gap between ensuring Sikhi can be taught in the classroom and it actually being taught, and community members like you can fill that gap. We hope that you can join us and LOK-E on April 3 to learn how you can take action and bring Sikhi to classrooms in your community.
WHAT: The workshop will provide an overview of Indiana’s public education system and equip you with the tools, resources, and language that can be used for approaching the right individuals in your school systems to prompt change. At the end of the workshop, you will be ready to use this knowledge to bring inclusive lesson plans, reading lists, and other programming to schools.
WHEN: Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM EST
WHERE: This workshop will be online. Please click here to register on Zoom.
As a reminder, the Sikh Coalition recently provided free legal aid to a Sikh high school senior who faced severe bias-motivated harassment and assault from a group of students who made statements including “Why do you wear these turbans” and “Why are you here?” This incident took place in February at Whiteland Community High School (WCHS) and in the aftermath of our client’s assault, WCHS officials committed to a plan that ensured our client’s safe return to school, provided him with resources to make up for lost instruction, and removed the suspension from his record. Then, on March 14, the Sikh Coalition hosted a Sikh awareness training for more than 100 administrators and staff at WCHS. Moving forward, we will continue to work with school officials on addressing broader issues of bias-based bullying within the school district.
Last month, the Sikh Coalition also partnered with LOK-E to host a virtual community town hall that created space for the Indianapolis sangat to speak about all of the related issues in Indiana’s public school system. If you were unable to attend that conversation, we sincerely hope that you will join us on Sunday to learn how you can take action to bring change to classrooms in your community.
I look forward to meeting you at the workshop.
