May 1, 2022 (Philadelphia, PA) -- Earlier this week, Sikh Coalition Community Development Manager Inderpreet Kaur facilitated a virtual presentation on Sikhism in partnership with Jefferson Health. The interactive session, entitled “Basics of the Sikh Faith: Important Considerations for Healthcare Professionals,” covered the basics of the Sikh faith and community, and was attended by Jefferson clinical health team members, including doctors, nurses, tech workers, medical students, and others.
Jefferson Health is a network of five hospitals in Philadelphia and New Jersey; with almost 1,000 licensed beds between them, the facilities also serve as teaching hospitals for Thomas Jefferson University. For the last three years, the Sikh Coalition has been working with the Jefferson Health team to provide information about the Sikh faith and community, as well as recommending best practices for respectfully engaging Sikh patients and visitors; this relationship-building work facilitated the training opportunity.
The training has been recorded and uploaded to Jefferson’s intranet, and the organization’s 40,000 plus employees will be able to access it at any point going forward. As a result of our continued engagement, the Sikh Coalition has been invited to give this Sikh awareness training on an annual basis and the training presentations will be a part of their employee onboarding.
“Culturally competent medical professionals are important to ensure inclusive healthcare service for underserved communities,” said Rucha Kaur, Sikh Coalition Community Development Director. “The Sikh Coalition is proud to continue doing our part through offering resources and training services to raise Sikh awareness, and we are grateful to the Jefferson Health team for their commitment to respectful and responsible care.”
