June 23, 2022 (New York, NY) – This August, the Sikh community will commemorate the ten year anniversary of the August 5, 2012 shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. To mark this important anniversary and honor the resilience of the Sikh community, the Sikh Coalition is assisting sangats in organizing their own National Day of Seva (selfless community service) event.

The nationwide events will take place from August 5-7, 2022 to honor those injured and in remembrance of those whose lives were taken: Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra, Satwant Singh Kaleka, and Baba Punjab Singh. More than 10 cities--from Los Angeles to Charlotte and Detroit to Olathe--have already confirmed Day of Seva projects for their sangats.
“National Day of Seva is an opportunity for sangats to give back while recognizing the impact that hate has on our society,” said Rucha Kaur, Community Development Director. "Ten years after the Oak Creek shooting tragedy, we remain inspired by the example of the sangat to do good in our communities, building the bridges that will help us advocate together against the continued danger of violent hate."
Since the launch of Day of Seva in 2013, volunteers in 50 cities nationwide have prepared meals for those in need, built homes, cleaned up neighborhood parks, and partnered with other communities on charity drives in honor of the lives lost in Oak Creek. This year, the goal is to make this the most impactful National Day of Seva.

As an alternative, the Sikh Coalition is also assisting sangats in organizing interfaith vigils
at their gurdwaras. If you have any questions about organizing a seva event or vigil in your city, please email our team at firstname.lastname@example.org
. We strongly encourage you to organize early so that your event is a success!
If you live near Oak Creek (particularly in Wisconsin or Illinois), we encourage you to join the Oak Creek sangat for their commemorative events during the August 5th weekend--including a vigil that will take place at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin on August 5, 2022 from 6 to 9 PM. Click here
for more information about the vigil and other commemorative events in Oak Creek. The Sikh Coalition also looks forward to sharing specific advocacy actions that you can take around the anniversary to call on your elected officials to move decisively against hate.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
