Raising Sikh Voices to #RememberOakCreek
August 15, 2022 (New York, NY) -- Over the past several weeks, the Sikh Coalition has been proud to support efforts to raise the Sikh voice around the 10th anniversary of the attack on the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin through media engagement and advocacy efforts.
In order to center the Oak Creek sangat, the Sikh Coalition worked to encourage local press to cover the anniversary. There were features by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
and Wisconsin Public Radio
in the weeks before August 5 and several interviews one week out from the vigil to promote attendance by the local community. The Sikh Coalition also worked to facilitate extensive coverage of the full weekend of events: all major Milwaukee-area TV networks and several Madison-area stations covered Friday’s vigil live
, multiple newspapers and radio stations published interviews
, and additional press hits focused on Saturday’s community event
, elected officials’ proclamations
, and more.
Multiple national outlets also covered the Oak Creek anniversary and its connection to the effort to track anti-Sikh hate crimes and the continued rise of violent white supremacy in the United States. You can read, watch, and listen to coverage featuring Sikh Coalition experts in CNN
, the Washington Post
, JUS Punjabi
, Interfaith America
, and the Washington Times
. We are still expecting more features to be released in the weeks ahead.
Additionally, the Sikh Coalition was proud to work with 20 different authors across the country to publish op-ed pieces urging Americans to remember Oak Creek and calling on our elected officials in Congress to take action. These pieces were published in national outlets like USA Today
, the Emancipator
, and Teen Vogue
, as well as state newspapers in Colorado
, New Jersey
, New York
, and California
Outside of press engagement, the Sikh Coalition was proud to work with the Revolutionary Love Project to create and launch the Remember Oak Creek learning hub
, which included educational resources, shareable content for social media, and more. A powerful video
calling on non-Sikh Americans to commemorate the Oak Creek gurdwara shooting was viewed and shared thousands of times on social media. We are grateful to the team at the Revolutionary Love Project for their collaboration on this important project.
Finally, in collaboration with both the Revolutionary Love Project and the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Sikh Coalition pushed advocates across the nation to contact Congress in support of three pieces of legislation that would help make all communities safer against the threat of targeted violence. All told, hundreds of users sent more than a thousand messages in support of these bills to their elected officials. This push followed the Sikh Coalition’s July 26 virtual congressional briefing
, which featured community perspectives from the Oak Creek sangat, Charleston’s Black community, and Pittsburgh’s Jewish community, as well as leaders in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
While the news cycle will shift from the Oak Creek anniversary, the Sikh Coalition will never forget August 5, 2012--nor will we stop fighting for both action and attention in response to the civil rights challenges facing our community.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
