August 25, 2022 (Richmond, VA) – The Sikh Coalition will be hosting a webinar on August 31 at 8 PM EST to guide sangat members through how to submit public comments for the Virginia State Department of Education (VDOE)’s first draft of the History & Social Science Standards of Learning. We will also create space for community members to ask questions about the standards review, and discuss next steps in the review process.
Click here to register for the webinar so that you can receive your log-in information and reminders. Please join the webinar via a computer so you can submit the public comments in real time.
As a reminder, the VDOE voted to postpone the first review of the standards at their August 17 meeting until their next board meeting in September. Public hearing sessions and community roundtables are tentatively slated throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia between late September and October. Accordingly, we must remain vigilant in advocating for inclusion at every opportunity we can, as the draft is subject to change.
During the webinar, Sikh Coalition Senior Education Manager Harman Singh will help sangat members in real-time as they fill out the two Google Forms for the public comments. Submitting the comments themselves will take less than 10 minutes, but we would like to offer the opportunity for us all to do them together. If you are unable to attend the webinar, you can review the instructions to
submit the public comments on your own via this blog post.
Finally, please email
education@sikhcoalition.org to let us know once you submit the surveys--it is important for us to have a sense of the numbers of survey respondents so that we are able to gauge our shared impact.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
