  • Thank You to National Day of Seva Organizers

September 6, 2022 (New York, NY) -- As we reflect on one month since the Oak Creek commemoration, the Sikh Coalition wants to express gratitude for the community sevadaars across the country who made Day of Seva and Night of Vigil programming possible. All told, sangats in more than 20 cities across the nation participated in this important initiative.

Multiple sangats held meal packing or food pantry seva, including in Detroit, MI; Charlotte, NC; Los Angeles, CA; San Antonio, TX; Olathe, KS; Lenexa, KS; and New York City, NY. Additionally, the Houston, TX, sangat packed both meals and backpacks for underserved children, and East Greenbush, NY, sangat members donated supplies for Afghan and Syrian refugees in Albany, NY. Sevadaars directly fed members of the local homeless population in Salt Lake City, UT, delivered meals in Oakland, NJ, and attended community events to provide hot food in Cincinnati, OH, and Salem, OR. The Indianapolis, IN, sangat held a water drive. Tree plantings were organized in both Bellingham, WA, and Albuquerque, NM, and sevadaars held public clean-ups in Asbury Park, NJ, and Lexington, KY. Finally, sangat members in Orangevale, CA, made a mural of posters to be sent directly to Oak Creek, and those in Federal Way, WA, were joined by elected officials and members of the larger community to build a trail at Steel Lake Park.

In addition to these Day of Seva projects, sangats in Fairfax Station, VA; Los Angeles, CA; Lawrenceville, NJ; Dayton, OH; Enola, PA; and Oakland, NJ all held Night of Vigil programming where they welcomed community members and interfaith leaders to reflect on the Oak Creek anniversary.

“We are grateful to all of the sangats who joined this commemorative effort,” said Rucha Kaur, Sikh Coalition Community Development Director. “The resilience of the Oak Creek sangat, and their determination to continue making a positive impact in their community through seva, are a reminder and an example to us all--just like the actions of these incredible sevadaars all across the country.”

The National Day of Seva initiative to honor the lives lost in the attack on the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin was started by the Sikh Coalition in 2013. You can learn more about the slate of activities that commemorated the 10-year anniversary in Oak Creek here, as well as the press coverage and advocacy work conducted around this important milestone here.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
