  • Are you registered to vote?

October 10, 2022 (New York, NY) -- Are you registered to vote? With Election Day only four weeks away, the Sikh Coalition is working to ensure that the Sikh voice is heard. Sikh Americans are a growing demographic, but our numbers won’t translate to influence or impact our elected officials unless we participate in our democracy. The first and easiest step in doing so is to exercise our right to vote this November!

In advance of the midterm elections on November 8, we encourage you to use our Civic Action Center where you can check your voter registration status, register to vote, and learn about the deadlines, candidates, mail-in and absentee ballots, and voting procedures specific to your area. You can also use this tool to ensure that you and your friends and family are ready to vote in the weeks ahead!

“As part of the Sikh Coalition’s ongoing efforts to increase Sikh civic engagement, it’s as important as ever for Sikhs to exercise the right to vote and remind elected officials that the Sikh community cannot be ignored,” said Nikki Singh, Sikh Coalition Senior Manager of Policy and Advocacy. “We are aiming for a strong Sikh voter turnout for this year’s midterms to reinforce the rising political power of the Sikh community.”

Many states have also started early voting, which allows voters to go to the polls in advance of Election Day. This helps to reduce crowds and ensures that more people have an opportunity to vote. To be clear, early voting is distinct from voting by mail or absentee voting. Early voting happens at a physical polling place; voting by mail is done remotely, with a ballot that is sent to your place of residence. You can learn more about your state’s rules for voting by mail--including how to request and return your ballot--by entering your voter information on this page. Please also note that in some states, 16-17-year-olds can pre-register to vote. Find your state’s election rules here and encourage your children to get a head start!

The Sikh Coalition is also encouraging sangats to confirm your own voter registration information, host voter registration drives, sign-up as poll workers, and to help get Sikhs to the polls!

As a reminder, the Sikh Coalition is a non-profit and non-partisan organization. All of our GOTV work is being done in support of broader Sikh American civic engagement, and not for the benefit of any candidate, elected official, or political party. The Sikh Coalition believes that it is critical for all Americans, regardless of their party affiliation or political preferences, to cast their ballots for federal elected officials, governor and other state-level positions, local-level officials, and ballot issues. In the weeks leading up to November 8th, we will continue sharing information about how to get out the vote and prepare for Election Day. Please email our team at gotv@sikhcoalition.org with any questions.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
