Dear Supporter Ji,

It gives me great pleasure to share with you that yesterday, the Utah State Board of Education voted in favor of new social studies standards, which for the first time ever will include Sikhism.

These new standards will give 606,000 students in Utah the opportunity to learn about the Sikh community. While this is an important achievement in the Sikh Coalition’s multi-year campaign to raise Sikh awareness at a generational level through accurate and inclusive state standards, I want to recognize that it would not have been possible without the support of the incredible Utah sangat!

In May 2020, the Sikh Coalition made the initial request for Sikhism to be included in the new standards. In December 2021, we facilitated a sign-on letter with the gurdwaras in Utah and submitted another formal request for the inclusion of Sikhism. And finally, the Sikh Coalition also facilitated the public testimony of Sikh community members and students at a Utah State Board of Education meeting in December 2021. The inclusion of Sikhism to the new social studies standards is a result of our years-long advocacy and the voices and efforts of our sangat members.

Local adoption and exploration of the new, more inclusive standards will begin after the Utah Board of Education develops a model curriculum in the coming months, and implementation will take place in the months and years to follow. We look forward to working with the Utah Department of Education to ensure appropriate training and resources for educators to appropriately teach about Sikhi in classrooms, as well as with parents and students in the sangat to ensure that Sikh voices inform how this content reaches our children.

Ever since I started working with the Sikh Coalition roughly a year ago, I have seen the love and dedication that our sangat members show in each fight to include accurate information about Sikhs in our public schools’ social studies standards. Utah is now the 15th in a growing list of states that have worked with the Sikh Coalition to implement this change, and we look forward to adding even more states to this list in the months and years ahead.

Chardi Kala,

Harman Singh
