Coalition Youth Activist Attends the White House Conference on Bullying Prevention

On March 10, 2011, President Obama, the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services gathered together at the White House Conference on Bullying Prevention to discuss the issue of school bullying and ways to combat it.  Conference attendees included students, parents, teachers and community leaders from across the country that have either experienced bullying or have taken action against it.

The Sikh Coalition’s extensive research and advocacy work on school bullying in New York City was recognized through an invitation to participate in the conference.  The Coalition sent Sikh youth activist Gurwinder Singh to represent the Sikh voice and to share his experiences with school bullying as well as his efforts to combat it on an individual level and through his work with the Sikh Coalition.

Gurwinder shares his experience attending the Conference in a piece he wrote for the Coalition's blog:

"This conference allowed me the opportunity to hear President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama speak on bullying in schools . . . They both sent a strong message to the country, saying that they take bullying issues seriously. I also met with other students who are working to address bullying issues in their own schools [as well as] psychologists, professors, parents and other experts on bullying. One mother spoke about her child committing suicide because he could not handle the bullying he experienced.  It was difficult hearing about the distress her child had faced . . . There is a long way to go toward eradicating [bullying] completely, but I want to reach out to Sikh students to reassure them that there is hope and help available."

Gurwinder's full piece is available to read on the Sikh Coalition blog.
