Raise your Voice! End Discrimination in US Armed Forces July 22, 2009 Sikhs fought for the United States in World War I, World War II, Vietnam and the Gulf War. Yet, since 1981, the U.S. Military has prohibited Sikhs from joining its ranks with their Sikh identity intact. Today, Sikh Americans are being forced to choose between our religion and our service to this country. Do you think this is as outrageous as we do? Then tell your elected official to do something about it. Send an email to your Congress person, asking them to support Sikhs’ right to continue serving as American soldiers by signing on to a letter to Secretary Robert Gates. Today, this promise is being broken—Sikh Americans are being told to shave their beards and remove their religiously-mandated turbans in order to serve in the US military. Sikhs have served in the US Army since World War I, and currently serve in armies across the world. They have always been able to successfully execute their military duties without sacrificing their articles of faith. As your constituent and a concerned citizen, I urge you to sign the Congressional letter to Secretary Gates, asking him to reconsider this exclusionary policy.
