Petition to the New York Times

On May 1, Greg Brock, senior editor of the New York Times, defended an NYT reporter’s general description of Hurricane Katrina as a ‘natural disaster.'

A reader took exception to that description pointing out that the damage from Katrina, at least in New Orleans was caused by human error and engineering failures.  Mr. Brock responded with this statement:

"I think all the families who were displaced and who lost loved ones would agree that a hurricane did exist."

WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Levees.org is calling on those who were displaced or lost loved ones due to the failure of the federally built levees in metro New Orleans to contact the New York Times.

You can write to Clark Hoyt who represents the readers of the NYTimes and tell him how you feel.  Please copy and paste this email address:  public@nytimes.com

Or

You can sign the petition below urging the New York Times to stop calling the 2005 flood in metro New Orleans a natural disaster.

BEST IF YOU SIGN PETITION BY 5PM EST FRIDAY MAY 7, 2010.

Dear Mr. Hoyt,

I understand that Mr. Greg Brock, Senior Editor of Standards, has defended a reporter who called Hurricane Katrina a 'natural disaster.'

I also understand that Mr. Brock believes "all the families who were displaced and who lost loved ones would agree that a hurricane did exist."

My family was displaced by the flooding caused when the levees failed in metro New Orleans, and I assure you that it was not Katrina that flooded the city. What flooded the city was poorly designed and constructed levees and floodwalls - the responsibility for which lies with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Katrina revealed structural flaws and ultimately exposed civil engineering mistakes by the Corps of Engineers.

I request that the New York Times issue a style alert to its reporters so that whenever the 2005 flooding in metropolitan New Orleans is referenced, that it be called a manmade disaster, not a natural disaster.
