After a month of unrelenting attempts to disrupt and derail the process while Congress was in recess, the defenders of the status quo are preparing an all-out attack on this once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a health care system that works for all Americans. Every single one of us needs to respond now. January 31, 2023 Subject: Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to urge you to support quality, affordable health care for everyone in America. I am writing today to urge you to stand up to corporate special interests like the insurance lobby, the drug makers lobby, and the for-profit hospital lobby and enact meaningful health care reform as soon as the summer recess is over. I have been absolutely appalled at the lies and deceit which continue to overshadow progress in the health care debate. While right-wing extremists raid town-hall meetings, shout down all opposition, and shut down the American tradition of open debate in an industry-funded attempt to derail this process, ordinary citizens are being denied access to adequate health care every day in every part of the country. With Congress about to return to session, now is the time to “Get It Done”! I urge you to support an adequate health care system which provides: -Health coverage that is affordable for every person, family, and business. Coverage with premiums and out-of-pocket costs based on one’s ability to pay. And government acting as a watchdog, setting and enforcing rules so private insurance companies can’t deny coverage or raise rates based on health history, age or gender. -Defined, comprehensive health care benefits that meet a family’s needs from prevention to chronic care. Low out-of-pocket costs so individuals can afford to get medical care when they need it. And maintaining and expanding an individual’s choice of doctors and hospitals. -Ability to keep one’s current private insurance plan or join a new public health insurance plan. The option of a public health insurance plan will be a guaranteed backup that will always be there to ensure quality, affordable health care coverage no matter what. -And equity in health care access, treatment, research, and resources to people and communities of color – leading to elimination of disparities in health outcomes – and strong health care services in low-income communities.
