The Sacred Headwaters is a vast alpine basin is the birthplace of three of the Northwest's most important salmon rivers: the Nass, the Skeena and the Stikine. It is home to caribou, grizzly bears, mountain goats, and myriad other wildlife species. Shell wants to turn this place into a coalbed methane gas field.

Dear Premier:

I am writing to express my strong opposition to Shell's proposed coalbed methane project in the Sacred Headwaters, the shared birthplace of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers.

These three rivers are among the world's greatest remaining wild salmon rivers. Coalbed methane is a risky industry and has caused serious environmental damage other places it has been tried. It has never been developed in a wild salmon watershed. Furthermore, in British Columbia no environmental assessment is required prior to the project proceeding, unlike other types of development such as mining.

The economy and identify of Northwest BC relies heavily on wildlife and wild salmon. For example, Skeena wild salmon alone bring over $110 million per year to the regional economy. By contrast, Shell's coalbed methane project offers minimal local economic benefits and few jobs.

I do not support Shell's coalbed methane proposal for the Sacred Headwaters. I urge you to stop Shell's drilling plans and work with the residents of the three watersheds to protect the values of the Sacred Headwaters.
