Top Priority: Raising the Debt CeilingDebt Limit

President Obama’s attempted “grand bargain” with Republicans on the budget-- that included unspecified (and unwise) cuts in vital economic security programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid--- is apparently no more popular with the GOP than with liberals like us. House Speaker John Boehner  (R-OH) indicated support for the deal on Saturday, but by Sunday night his leash had been yanked by Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and the Tea Party purists.  They objected to the fact that it included modest tax adjustments for millionaires, billionaires, and oil companies. At a press conference this morning, the President said he was willing to “take significant heat from my party” to cut a deal, and said if liberals care about maintaining important government social investments, they “have to be interested in how we’re going to pay for it.”  We have a suggestion: how about repealing the failed Bush tax cuts?

Bleak Job Report - Take Action Now

For the second consecutive month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed slow job growth.  As the budget debate continues, ADA believes that there isn’t enough focus on the most important issue:  jobs.  If we cut government spending, we will likely only increase our unemployment woes.  Now is the time to invest in America’s future.  We need a real jobs program now, and here’s one proposal that would help one of the hardest hit demographic groups; America’s youth.  H. Res 216 would increase the funding for important programs (AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and Job Corps) and would immediately create job opportunities for young people trying to start their careers in the midst of the Great Recession.  Please take 1 minute and use our online lobbying tools to contact your Representative about H. Res 216.
