Komen Flip Flops
A lot has been said about the Susan G. Komen foundation’s decision to cut funding to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings, and then the flip flop to "honor existing grants" after the publicity storm. We know that Karen Handel, Komen's adamantly pro-life vice president for public policy, pushed for this controversial decision. 'If we just say it's about investigations, we can defund Planned Parenthood and no one can blame us for being political,” she said. We also know that millions of people took action, signed petitions (like ours) and told the Komen foundation that it is not okay to deny breast cancer screenings to low-income women because of political reasons. Thanks again to all of you who took action with us!
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is leading the fight to protect mail delivery and the public workers who touch each and every one of our homes. Soon, the Senate will consider new postal legislation, and we’re asking you to contact your senator immediately to tell him/her that the 21st Century Postal Service Act (S. 1789) is unacceptable in its current form.

“The bill would force the Postal Service to close hundreds of mail processing centers, shut thousands of post offices, and cause massive delays in mail delivery,” said Cliff Guffey, President of the American Postal Workers Union. “By failing to give more substantial financial relief, the bill would weaken the Postal Service, kill jobs, and drive customers away.” The Ed Shultz Show explained the forces attacking the Postal Service in this video.
243,000 New Jobs, 24 Million Still Waiting
The job report for last Friday was great news for the 243,000 people who found new employment in January according the BLS's monthly report. But that isn't much consolation for the 24 million who are still seeking full-time work. It's another step in the right direction, but Congress needs to put aside partisan political maneuvering and make job creation their #1 priority. 8.3% unemployment is the lowest we have seen since February 2009 - a month after President Obama was inaugurated - but we can and we must do better.
