Happy Birthday, Medicare!
Today marks the 47th anniversary of Medicare’s being signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965.
To celebrate, ADA’s Working Families Win (WFW) project is teaming up with Iowa Alliance of Retired Americans and Progress Iowa to host “Let’s Not Be the Last Generation.” The festivities will focus on ways to preserve Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid, and how the Affordable Care Act has strengthened Medicare. This event starts at 3:00pm at the Waterloo public library, located at 415 Commercial Street, and will include an “action” component organized by WFW. Light refreshments will be provided. Senate Passes the Middle Class Tax Cut Act
Last week, we asked you to contact your Senators and urge them to support the Middle Class Tax Cut Act. Because of your actions and support, we celebrate the passage of the bill by a 51-48 vote. This bill which would extend tax cuts for the 98% of Americans who need it, and allow the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% to expire on schedule at the end of this year, now moves to the House. .
Yet the real work has only begun. The bill must now make it through the House of Representatives, led by Republicans who are bought and paid for by the elite 2%. You can help ADA advocate for the real America -- the 98% -- by making a small contribution of $10, $15, or $25 today. Help us ensure tax equity for all – please donate now!
Upcoming ADA Events
Save the date! You will surely want to attend ADA’s annual Banquet on Wednesday, September 12 in Washington, DC. Last year, we honored progressive hero House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Other honorees and speakers included Sen. John Kerry, NEA President Dennis Van Roekel, Jack Blum, Esq., and ADA President Rep. Lynn Woolsey. (View photos here.) This year, we’ll be honoring an outspoken progressive who has always stood up for his beliefs -- Rep. Dennis Kucinich. More details to follow shortly!
After our DC Banquet, we’ll be holding a reception in New York City on November 8 to celebrate the lifetime career and achievements of former ADA President Rep. Barney Frank at the home of Peter Yarrow. More details on the November reception to come.
- The latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures were released last week. Check out Bob Lucore's latest blog, about the need to end government austerity.
