Medicare turns 47

Last week was Medicare’s 47th birthday.  To celebrate, Working Families Win (WFW) teamed up with the Iowa Alliance of Retired Americans and Know Your Care to host a forum on the Affordable Health Care Act, Social Security, and Medicare. WFW fired up the crowd of activists and concerned community members to get involved by bird dogging candidates and volunteering for voter contact work during the take action portion of the presentation.

Our 65th Awards Banquet!

You won’t want to miss ADA’s 65th annual banquet on Wednesday, September at the National Education Association headquarters in Washington, DC, honoring (and roasting) Rep. Dennis Kucinich.  We will award special honorees with the Frances Perkins Award for Outstanding Government Services, the Reuther-Chavez Award for Labor Leadership and the Winn Newman Lifetime Achievement Award. Want to know who?  Stay tuned for announcements!

Check out last year’s event, which honored progressive hero House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, NEA President Dennis Van Roekel, and Jack Blum, Esq.  Special guests included Sen. John Kerry, ADA President Rep. Lynn Woolsey and more.  View photos here.  This year, we’ll be honoring an outspoken progressive who has always stood up for his beliefs -- Rep. Dennis Kucinich.  More details to follow shortly!

Honoring Rep. Barney Frank

On November 8 from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the New York city home of Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), we will gather to honor and say thank you to the liberal giant of our generation, Rep. Barney Frank.  Frank, a former ADA President, has always been a voice of reason, advocating for civil and human rights, sound economic policy, military budget reform, fair and affordable housing, banking reform and so very much more. We hope you will join us in celebrating his lifetime career and achievements.  Details on how to purchase tickets will be announced shortly.

Noteworthy:

  • In today’s economy, the problem is austerity economics. The solution is Prosperity Economics. This report confronts the myths, facts and solutions needed to move our economy forward and should be read by all.
  • ADA has signed on to a letter to critical House of Representatives offices, in support of the Arms Sale Responsibility Act.  The new legislation, introduced by Rep. Grijalva, aims to prohibit the transfer of defense articles and defense services to the governments of foreign countries that are engaging in gross violations of internationally recognized human rights.
