ADA 2012 Election Review

Together, we celebrated a huge victory last week.  Not only did we come together to elect President Obama to his second term in office, we also gained more progressive voices in both chambers of Congress, won several critical Tea Party challenges, and witnessed the voters of Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington come together to support marriage equality.  Read ADA’s full statement.

While our work over the past few months has covered over 30 key communities in dozens of states, we would like to highlight three key areas for you where ADA’s Working Families Win (WFW) campaign made a crucial difference:

New Hampshire
WFW New Hampshire targeted independents and women voters for three races, the Hassan/Lynch race for Governor, the Gilmore/Luther race for Senate District 12 and the Nyquist/Sanborn race for Senate District 9. Working Families Win placed over 5,700 calls into SD12 & SD9 in 7 days. According to America Votes NH, we “Had a major impact. [Your] calls went into some of the most important legislative races in the state.” The progressive candidates won in the gubernatorial race, SD12, and just 210 votes separate the SD9 candidates, which sends the race to recount. We also played a role in President Obama’s win in this presidential battleground state.

Iowa
In Iowa WFW again used a state- level strategy to impact ballot races. We targeted a state house race (HD59), a state senate (SD30) race and two congressional races (CD1 & CD4). Strategically, WFW IA targeted both overlapping house and senate districts and helped to win the state- level races. The WFW Iowa crew canvassed over 1,800 homes using literature that compared candidate positions on issues and called almost 5,000 voters. Our GOTV efforts helped to ensure the Democrats’ winning the Iowa senate by 600 votes!  The congressional races split, with Bruce Braley winning in CD1 and Christie Vilsack losing to Steve King in CD4. Again, ADA played a role in a presidential battleground state that President Obama won.

Nevada
WFW Nevada targeted a tight state senate race, SD15. Two incumbents were pitted against one another, with a strong progressive, Sheila Leslie, narrowly defeated by 266 votes. Working Families Win volunteers called over 2000 irregular Washoe County voters. Unfortunately we were just shy of pulling a victory in this state senate race. While that was disappointing, ADA again played a role in this presidential battleground state.

The ADA Political Action Committee also played a huge role by endorsing and supporting dozens of progressives across the country.  We contributed to the success of 19 progressive candidates, including Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Sherrod Brown (OH), Elizabeth Warren (MA), Keith Ellison (MN-5), and Raul Grijalva (AZ-3).

We couldn’t have done it without your support.  Thank you!

Now we focus our efforts on the lame duck session.  Stay tuned for details!

ADA Reception Honoring Barney Frank

On November 8 at the New York City home of Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), we gathered to honor and celebrate the liberal giant of our generation. The Honorable Barney Frank, a former ADA President, has dedicated his career to progressive values, advocating for civil and human rights, a sound economic policy, military budget reform, fair and affordable housing, banking reform and so very much more. With his quick wit and keen mind, he’s been a stalwart voice for the very best liberal ideas and ideals.  See pictures from this event here.

Tax Equity Press Conference

Dozens of concerned Delawareans attended ADA's press conference to urge the state's two senators to make higher taxes on the wealthy the central component of any "fiscal cliff" deficit deal.  Speakers included Delaware State Education Association (DSEA) president Frederika Jenner, former Executive Director of the Newark Senior Center Jean Williams, and Newark City Councilman Jerry Clifton.  More on the tax equity conference here.

Care about tax equity?  Today, our friends at Americans for Tax Fairness are holding a national call-in day to encourage your Senators and Representatives to support tax equity by allowing the Bush-era tax cuts to expire as planned.  Call toll free now at (888) 497-9539 and tell your Representatives to end the Bush-era tax cuts for the richest 2%.  It's time for the wealthiest Americans and big business to pay their fair share of taxes.
