Supreme Court to Rule on DOMA and Prop 8

The Supreme Court heard arguments in two landmark cases last week on constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8.  While the Court has yet to pass judgment, it's fair to say that the LGBT community has already won this battle.

Looking at a historic timeline of gay rights in the United States, the shift in public opinion, and the recent list of elected officials who have endorsed marriage equality, it's evident that the time for equal rights is now.

While it's difficult to say how the Supreme Court will rule, it seems unlikely that the Court will make a sweeping ruling on gay rights.  At least four of the justices suggested that DOMA improperly discriminates against gay couples by blocking the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages in states that have laws permitting them.  For now, the hearings are over, and we eagerly await the rulings expected in late June.

March for Medicaid Expansion in Iowa

Expanding Medicaid is the best, most cost effective way to offer health care coverage to over 150,000 working and poor Iowans; plus it will also save the state tens of millions of dollars.  Join ADA and the Iowa Working Families Win campaign on Sunday, April 7th for a statewide day of action for Medicaid Expansion.  Contact us for more information.

Tax Day Events

Last year for Tax Day, ADA hosted a progressive tax reform summit on Capitol Hill chaired by John Nichols of The Nation magazine, followed by a rally outside anti-tax zealot Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform office.  This year, we’ll be organizing and coordinating a variety of rallies and educational events in Indiana, Iowa and Delaware.  More details to follow.
